EDITOR—The continued quarrel over the location of the district headquarters of Maracha-Terego and recent failure by Parliament to reach an agreement on the creation of Maracha district is a typical example of how leaders can fail their people. Nobody now trusts Maracha politicians because of their lies and inconsistencies.

For far too long Maracha has been missing out on very persuasive leadership with the ability to lobby, convince and influence others and this explains why an agreement on the creation of Maracha district could not be reached. Our politicians have given us a sword by the blade.

They have nurtured this conflict to perpetuate overstay in power and perhaps as the only form of accountability to the people! Rational and pro-people leadership would have resolved this impasse and avoided conflict at the time a motion to create a district out of Maracha and Terego counties was moved in 2005 by seeking amendments to the motion.

Informed leadership would also have ensured council meeting minutes clearly documented the fact that council had given its power of attorney to the then local government minister Kahinda Otafiire.

In an event this couldn’t be evidenced, the judges, in line with the law, ruled that Otafiire did not have the powers to determine the headquarters because this mandate rests with the Local Council and his decision was null and void.

The absurdity with this bickering is that it has continued to deny poor women and youth access to jobs, good road roads, clean water and drugs while the well-insulated MPs enjoy free medication, good housing, expensive cars, etc.

But the good news is that, 2011 is around the corner. It is a unique opportunity to return the sword to the politicians the same way they gave it to us, a time to exalt leaders who care about the next generation and to humble politicians whose only focus is how to win the next elections.
