The Police in western Uganda are hunting for 17 suspects who escaped from custody.

Vincent Ikwe, the acting Kyenjojo district Police commander, said the men escaped at around 2:00am on Tuesday.

The western region Police spokesperson, Elly Matte, said the suspects used a hacksaw blade to break the iron bars in the window and ventilators.

He, however, wondered how they accessed the blade and where the guards were at the time of the breakout.

Matte identified some of the escapees as Asaba Rudogo, 19, and Simon Omuhereza, 23, both residents of Kajuma village in Kigoyerra parish in Kyarusozi sub-county. The duo was on murder charges.

Others were Dickens Twinomugisha 24, of Kyakunyere in Kakabara sub-county, Alex Twikirize, 19, of Bihehe in Butiiti sub-county and Julius Mubiru, 33, of Kakyomya estates in Bugaki sub-county. The three were on defilement charges.

Matte also identified Jovani Kataribawo of Rwamagembe in Butiiti sub-county who was on abduction charges and Sanasio Tibahikayo of Kyakatwire in Nyantungo sub-county on rape charges.

Another suspect was David Asaba, 20, a resident of Kikumiro village in Nyaibanda parish in Nyantungo sub-county.

Matte, however, said none of the suspects had been re-arrested.

He said the five Police officers who were on duty on the fateful night had been arrested to help with the investigations.

They were Sam Kaija, Joseph Byakagaba, Alex Okoth, Fred Bakanyikara and Abraham Baguma.
This is the third time suspects escape from Police cells in the western region in a period of five months.
