A Ugandan, Doris Akol is the June 2008 winner of the Ralph Bell Prize of £100 .The prize is awarded to the best Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) finalist who has completed their chosen syllabus and sits more than one paper in that intake.

The ICSA is a leading professional body for company secretaries and a global voice on governance and regulatory issues. ICSA Uganda was launched in June this year with offices at the Serena International Conference Centre.

Allison D. Kibirige, the, Chairman of ICSA Uganda says achieving the status of chartered secretary with the ICSA means you will have completed one of the most wide-ranging courses in business and will have the skills and talents to make a difference to business performance.

He says a graduand of ICSA will be in demand in all sectors of business.
Kibirige adds that there are plenty of opportunities to work abroad because it is internationally-recognised.

It is a fast-track to attaining board level position as company secretary where you will be tasked to oversee the smooth running of the business including advising senior colleagues on issues like corporate law, governance and risk management.

The institute provides a wide-range study of business disciplines
The scheme comprises of four components: certificate, diploma, professional programme part I, and professional programme part II.

If you have no prior qualifications, you start at the certificate level but if you have a relevant degree or other recognised qualifications, you can start at the professional level.

Akol is a lawyer working with Uganda Revenue Authority as the assistant commissioner in charge of border affairs policy and ruling.

She says she joined ICSA in 2007 at professional level II and gained graduate status when she finished last year after completing modules in corporate governance, corporate financial management, corporate administration and corporate secretaryship.

Akol says any serious person can excel.
The prize will be awarded to her at graduation in March. Another 16 prizes are also awarded to top students in each of the chosen modules at the different levels.
