It is not Church of Uganda property

EDITOR—Once again, The New Vision has got it wrong. The Church of Uganda has more than 50 churches in the United States that are now part of the Church of Uganda. Their properties, however, are not owned by the Church of Uganda. They are owned by those individual congregations.

The headline, therefore, in your edition of January 8, which says, “Church of Uganda to lose US property” is wrong. How can the Church of Uganda lose something it does not own?

The fact of the matter is that the members of those congregations bought the land with their own money; they raised their own money to put up the buildings; and the title to the property is in the name of the local congregation.

The California Supreme Court’s decision stated that the case should be decided using American “neutral principles of law”.

We are praying for our churches in California and trusting that God’s justice will prevail, and the rightful owners will be able to keep their property and buildings.
