Lands, housing and urban development minister, Daniel Omara Atubo has built a private secondary school in Lira district. Atubo, who is also the Otuke county MP, started Leo Atubo College at Core village in an attempt to uplift education standards in the region.

The school, located 8 kilometres on the Lira-Kitgum road, is named after his father ‘Leo Atubo’ who was a catechist.

Speaking during a meeting on Saturday to set out strategies to open the school, Atubo said only 200 students would be admitted at the school for senior one this year.

He said the school had adequate classrooms, dormitories, a library, laboratory and toilet facilities to cater for the students’ needs and sanitation.

Atubo disclosed that the school would begin A Level next year. He said 13 teachers had already been recruited.

He explained that the education standard in Lango and other districts of the north had declined due to the LRA conflict.

Atubo said the only way to improve it was to open more private schools and encourage competition.

“We have a challenge to raise the standard because parents think that their children will fail if they study in the north,” Atubo said.
