ON its third day of night operations around the city, the police on Thursday rounded up 177 vagabonds and street children including some who had been released the previous day.

The police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, however, appealed to magistrates to consider giving tougher sentences to the suspects, saying they were a menace to security in the city.

“We get surprised that many hardcore criminals return to the streets soon after they have been taken to court. This is dangerous,” she said.

Nabakooba said the police’s third day of operations had yielded good results.

Nabakooba said many of the suspects were marijuana addicts who had dozed off at the time of arrest. “Even now we have some who are behaving as if they are lunatics and have refused to make statements or reveal their names because they are still under the influence of marijuana,” Nabakooba said.

She said the operations would continue until sanity was returned to Kampala City.

“We cannot let these people terrorise the city,” she declared.
