Government development programmes are being frustrated due to rampant corruption among district leaders, the Kasese resident district commissioner has said.

“Some leaders are using their relatives to win tenders and consequently do shoddy work,” said Capt. James Mwesigye.

He was speaking at the Rwenzori Square during celebrations to mark the 23rd NRM anniversary on Monday.

Mwesigye stressed that the Government would not shy away from fighting corruption. The Rt. Rev. Canon Julius Kithaghenda, the district chairperson, said: “A piglet worth sh30,000 is being bought at sh60,000.”

Kithaghenda also revealed that sh1.5b had been allocated to the district this financial year for poverty eradication.

He disclosed that people in Bukonzo region would get electricity, saying work on the River Mubuku dam in Bughoye sub-county would soon be completed.

Kithaghenda added that the district would get sh400m for road maintenance this financial year.
