THE Police have set up a 15-man committee to bolster investigations into the recent wave of child sacrifice to curb the vice.

The committee is headed by Detective Assistant Commissioner of Police Moses Binoga, deputised by the Police head of Child and Family Protection Unit, Christine Nadingi, Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said.

The committee, she said, in addition to child sacrifice would also handle cases of missing children.
Nabakooba said the committee had already visited Mayuge district to investigate the disappearance of a child.

Early this month the Police issued measures to fight child sacrifice, including deploying officers to check vehicles and motorcycles to fight child sacrifice and human trafficking.

A total of 2,010 anti-trafficking officers have been trained for the job. A counter-trafficking unit has also been created to curb child sacrifice.

“We are going to search vehicles at various check points. We shall at random ask children in vehicles to identify the people they are with,” said Police chief Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura.

Nabakooba added that the Police have begun carrying out the searches.

There were also plans of establishing courts for child sacrifice cases. Last year, there were 18 suspected ritual murder cases reported to the Police, of which 15 had conclusively been investigated and committed to the High Court.

Police findings established that most ritual murders were committed by either parents or relatives of the victims, a view supported by confessions of some of the suspects in the 15 cases, Police said.
