Reggae artiste Moses Ssali, a.k.a Bebe Cool, was yesterday arrested and whisked off to Mengo court over a sh22m debt.
Bebe Cool owes the money to Prosco International, a Kampala money lending firm.

The singer was arraigned before the Mengo court chief magistrate, Silver Collins Okullu, at 3:00pm after being arrested in Ntinda by Herbert Tugume, a court bailiff.

Prosco International wanted Bebe Cool committed to Luzira civil prison for failure to pay back the money that had accumulated to sh22m.

A shaken Bebe Cool, accompanied by a fellow musician only identified as Chizzo, agreed to settle the matter out of court after depositing a cheque for sh2m, and staking his Range Rover, popularly known in Kampala city as Baffudde, as collateral.

He promised to clear the outstanding debt by February 28. He will pay the balance in two installments.

He did not enter plea because the two sides quickly agreed amicably before the chief magistrate.
Both parties also agreed that Cool pays sh16m and not the accumulated sh22m.

Outside court, Bebe Cool survived re-arrest after he lost his cool and pounced on a New Vision photojournalist, who was taking his pictures as he left court. He chased him around the court yard.

“Why are you guys witch- hunting me? When I’m done with this, I will personally deal with you, Kabuubi... prepare to forget about that camera,” he raged.

The photojournalist, Ronald Kabuubi, fled for dear life as the drama paralysed work at the busy court.

Mengo Court security was on alert to re-arrest Bebe Cool for assault. It took a collective effort to calm the enraged singer, who was later driven off in a Toyota Delica wagon.

Interestingly, the two are long time friends. The photojournalist has covered a number of the singer’s concerts, and took his pictures at Mayo Clinic at Wandegeya when he (Bebe Cool) was stabbed by one of Jose Chameleone’s stooges.

Kabuubi also covered Bebe Cool’s reconciliation with Jose Chameleone, a fellow singer, brokered by the Minister of State for Micro-Finance, Gen. Salim Saleh.
