JOSEPH Nsubuga put up a superb show for Team Uganda to finish second in the Standard Chartered Bank Greatest Race on Earth marathon relay which concluded yesterday in Hong Kong, reports Norman Katende.

Nsubuga finished seventh a feat that earned the Uganda team $50,000 (sh99.5m) cash prize.

Going into the final leg with Team Kenya leading by over 12 minutes, Nsubuga’s role was to make sure that he did not lose by over 12 minutes to maintain second position since chasing Kenya was a tough hurdle.

And this he did effectively despite clocking one of his poorest marathon time of two hours 21 minutes and 59 seconds in the challenging race.

Uganda accumulated nine hours 25 minutes and 59 seconds after four legs in the Nations Challenge. Uganda Athletics Federation award 50% of the prize money to the runners and the balance to finance its development.

“It is good marathon running is on the rise. Alex Malinga was a lone star just five years ago,” said Standard Chartered Bank’s Herbert Zake.

Nsubuga took part in the last leg relay after Moses Cherop, Malinga and Amos Masai competed in Nairobi, Singapore and Mumbai.
It was Uganda’s best placing having finished third in the past two events.
