THE High Court in Jinja has issued an interim order blocking the National Forestry Authority (NFA) from evicting suspected encroachers on forest land in Mayuge district.

Muse Musimbi, the court assistant registrar, gave the order on Monday.
The squatters on South Busoga Forest Reserve were represented by Norman Aisu.

The co-defendants served with the legal notice included the Attorney General and NFA.

NFA had served residents of Malongo (Bumwena) and Kityerera sub-counties with eviction orders. This led to a confrontation on January 26 in which two residents died.

Musimbi ruled that the order shall remain in force until April 23 or until further orders are given from the High Court.

The suspected encroachers, represented by Idi Mwandha, have also petitioned President Yoweri Museveni over the matter.

Mwandha recently told The New Vision that their resident district commissioner, John Fisher Kasenge, “seemed biased and was siding with NFA.”
