The Democratic Party has asked the Government to protect Uganda’s economy from being crippled by the global financial crisis. Addressing journalists yesterday, the deputy secretary general, Michael Lulume Bayiga, said: “Economic experts have predicted that the crisis will deepen and affect African economies. Several African countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya have started laying strategies to prepare for the crisis, yet our Government is doing nothing.”

Women rights activists have organised a demonstration to remember victims of gender-based violence and ritual murder. According to Allen Asiimwe, the chairperson of FIDA, the demonstration is aimed at raising awareness of the high prevalence of the violence. The event that has been dubbed, “Light a Candle Campaign,” will start at the Railway Station gardens at 2:00pm on Thursday with a march through the city centre to the Parliament.
