HERBERT Wafula and Ham Onsandu have been appointed coaches for Ugandan sides Victoria and Rwenzori respectively in the 2009 Bamburi Super Series that kicks off this weekend.

Wafula coaches Hima Impis while Onsandu guides Entebbe Mongers in the local league. The two were appointed by the Uganda Rugby Union.

The other sides in the eight-team 15s tournament include Twigas from Tanzania, Cheetahs, Lions, Nguvu Sharks, Rhinos and Buffaloes, all from Kenya.

The teams have been placed in two pools and will play on a home and away basis. The top teams in either group will meet in the final in Nairobi.

Country rugby manager and also national coach Yayiro Kasasa said Wafula and Onsandu were appointed because of their experience in management and coaching.

“Wafula, 34, is a highly-rated coach with both sevens and 15s experience, that is why he was appointed. Onsandu coached the Kenya national sevens team from 1996-1999 and led them to the first Safari 7s title. He also coached Kenya’s top club Harlequins from 1997-1999,” Kasasa explained.

* The inaugural tertiary institutions rugby league kicks off this Saturday at various grounds.

The competition will feature six universities that include Makerere, Kyambogo, Makerere University Business School, Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, UCU Mukono, and Kampala International.

The competition is aimed at increasing the number of players in active rugby and keeping former secondary school players actively involved.

“This is the only way of developing the sport by having a large number of participants to feed the national team,” said Kasasa.
