President Yoweri Museveni has mourned former guerrilla war combatant Dick Mayanja, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 75.

In a condolence massage to the bereaved family, Museveni hailed Mayanja for being focused and steadfast in supporting the National Resistance Army (NRA).

“He was one of the 1981 fighters who was recruited by Brig. Matayo Kyaligonza under the Mwanga Unit that operated mostly in Mukono, Wakiso and Kayunga districts,” Museveni stated in a condolence massage read by the general duties minister in the Prime Minister’s office, Hajjat Janat Mukwaya.

Mukwaya, who is also the area Member of Parliament, delivered a sh2m burial contribution from the President to the family.

Mayanja, a resident of Bunankanda village in Ntenjeru-Kojja sub-county in Mukono district, died at Nyenga Hospital after a long illness.

He has been suffering from heart complications. Mukono resident district commissioner Maj. David Matovu said one of Mayanja’s outstanding contributions to the NRM struggle was transporting Museveni across Lake Victoria to Kenya.

“He often used his boat and offered himself to transport mzee across the lake whenever he travelled. Such a spirit of love for freedom should be emulated by everybody. It is good he has witnessed the freedom he fought for,” Matovu said.
