Minerals state minister Peter Lokeris has said the re-mapping of Karamoja has been unsuccessful due to insecurity in the area.

“It is unfortunate that we do not have new maps of Karamoja, yet the Government needs the data,” he said.

Lokeris was speaking during the tour of mineral sites in Nakapiripirit and Moroto districts on Wednesday.

He said it was risky for the Government to use the low-flying planes for the survey mapping.

“The planes could be shot at,” Lokeris said at a meeting with Moroto local government officials at the district headquarters.

Lokeris said a campaign to sensitise the residents about the survey was being planned.

The acting commissioner for geology, Zachary Baguma, advised the officials to properly utilise the revenues received from the sale of the minerals.

Some of the minerals include gold, limestone, platinum and uranium.
