ALTHOUGH her heritage involves many nationalities, Zarinah Hassan a.k.a Zari is proud to be a Ugandan.
Zari grew up in Uganda doing karaoke performances, but now lives in South Africa where she runs a cosmetics shop and a tertiary college in Pretoria.

Last year, her Luganda song Oliwange was nominated for the best East African artiste in the Channel O Music Video Awardss.

She has followed the Oliwange video, she has now followed it with another titled I am fine, which has become so hot in Pretoria.

It was released during Easter.
“All they want is more of her, so her fan base is increasing everyday,” Moses Ssemwanga, a Ugandan in Pretoria said.

Zari admits that being a Ugandan musician in South Africa is very difficult because in South Africa, they prefer their music — kwaito and house music.

She has switched some of her lyrics to Zulu, hoping to boost her career.

So far, her biggest fan base is in Uganda, though while she is in South Africa, she gets to use the latest equipment compared to what she would find in Uganda.

Zari sings reggae tone, dance-hall, a bit of kwaito, afrobeat and a bit of house music; she is trying to win all genres.

‘‘In Uganda, people love dancehall and afro beat, when you come down here it’s got to be kwaito. Until I find what appeals to people, I’ll keep doing mixes,’’ Zari says.

Club Silk’s DJ Shiru says Zari’s music is mostly liked by fans of East African night at the club. “This, of course, goes with the video mixing, which makes her music more popular.”

Shiru adds that the moment music makes it through their dance-force at Club Silk and the fans frequently request for it; then it must be good.
Zari is a smashingly beautiful young mother of three.

She was born in Jinja 22 years ago. In 2000, she went to visit her family and ended up staying in South Africa.

She has had several songs that include Nakowa Okuyomba; Yasima and Nkanyuma.
