THE sh700m rural electrification programme in Tororo district has started, writes Moses Nampala. The Woman MP, Grace Oburu, recently said the new Mbale-Pajwenda-Iyolwa power line that was being was almost complete.

She was addressing residents of Pajwenda trading centre in Mulanda sub-county. “Wealthy people ought to establish posho and rice mills to encourage peasants to grow such crops and add value to their produce,” she said.

“Your target now should be to increase household incomes,” she advised. The Ministry of Energy, through the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), contracted Maama Contractors, a Kampala-based firm, to fix the line.

Geoffrey Muyomba, the project manager, said over 380 poles had been used to install a power line from Mbale substation to Tororo.

“We are now scrutinising minor faults on the line and fixing them,” he said.

He said once the cross-checking of possible defects was done, the firm would hand over the line to UEDCL.
