THE High Court in Lira district has sentenced Boniface Atine to life imprisonment for murdering his wife.

Justice Simon Byamukama Mugenyi agreed with the prosecution that Atine, 39, of Bar sub-county in Lira killed his wife, Jennifer Adong, on September 3, 2005.

Court heard that Atine and Adong divorced in 2004, but they later re-united although Adong did not move back into Atine’s house.

Prosecution said on the fateful day at around 8:30pm, Atine bought two bottles of beer from Jimmy Alele, Adong’s neighbour.

Alele, who stays about 150 metres from Adong’s house, testified that he saw Atine enter Adong’s house that evening.

Adong was found dead the next morning and Atine was missing.

Atine failed to prove to court that he had travelled to Hoima district on that day.

“After the incident, the accused fled. This is leaves no doubt to the court that the accused had a hand in the death of his wife,” read Byamukama’s judgement.

Atine is the second person to be sentenced to life within two weeks of the High Court session in the district.

A UPDF officer, Lt. William Obote, was last week sentenced for murdering his wife.
