THE finance minister has appointed Eng. Francis Baziraake the Uganda Road Fund (URF) chairman.
The fund is to look into value for money worthiness of road maintenance activities.

Baziraake, who teaches at Kyambogo University, said the appointment gave him a chance to contribute to the field that had caused a lot of controversy, especially in matters like poor road maintenance.

“We will be looking at the how the money is used for various projects, including roads and related infrastructure.

“I will ensure that roads are properly maintained to reduce on road carnage and loss that poor roads have brought,” he said on Monday.

Baziraake will be working with a board and a chief executive officer to be appointed soon, sources said.
They said URF would also oversee the funds, particularly for road maintenance, which it will give to roads agency and local authorities.
“It will be getting money from fuel levies that have been going to the consolidated fund and revenue from weigh-bridges.

“It will look into how effectively such funds were used by the implementing agencies.”

The works ministry got over sh1 trillion for rehabilitation and opening up of new roads.
