NON-governmental organisations (NGOs) will soon start declaring monies and other contributions from donors. Addressing participants at a workshop at the Hoima Kolping Hotel last week, the chairperson of the NGO board, Joyce Mpanga, said the NGO Act enacted last year would promote transparency and accountability.

“As long as you handle public funds, you must be ready to account for them. Failure to comply is a crime. Don’t think that accountability and transparency stops in government offices. Even NGOs receive money on behalf of the public,” Mpanga stressed.

She said the new law, which is yet to be implemented, would assist to eliminate unscrupulous NGOs.

Mpanga, who is also a former minister, revealed that investigations had established that some NGOs were funded by foreign countries to antagonise the Government.

“I want to warn such NGOs to avoid politics and stick to their mandate because their certificates will be revoked if they continue participating in politics,” she asserted.
