THE acting Katikkiro of Buganda, Emmanuel Ssendaula, has asked the Government to implement tougher punishments against schools and teachers that cheat for students in the final examinations.

He said cheating should be treated with an iron hand because it compromises education standards. The Buganda government, he added, supported the proposal of closing down the schools engaged in examination malpractices and cancelling of the certificates of teachers engaged in the vice.

The Katikkiro, who is also the minister for education in the Buganda government, was addressing students and teachers of Lubiri Secondary School and Christians of Martyrs Church Mackey Nateete in his office in Bulange last week.

The school bought a sh2m certificate to support the Kabaka’s Education Fund. The Christians also donated sh330,000 and over 200 books to Mutesa I Royal University.

“I urge the Government to close down the schools that cheat for students and cancel academic papers of the errant teachers,” Ssendaula said.

He said several schools cheat for their students because they want to appear in newspapers as the best performers.

“Mengo does not associate with cheating schools. We must fight this.” He added that although the Buganda government had instituted a sh1,000 fee to be paid by every student towards the Kabaka’s Education Fund, few schools had enforced the appeal.

Ssendaula urged schools to sensitise students on land matters, which he said had become a contentious issue in the kingdom.
