KAMPALA businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba was on Thursday ambushed by armed robbers on the Bushenyi-Mbarara highway. Basajjabalaba, who was travelling from Bushenyi to Mbarara at midnight, escaped unhurt after he drove through the staged roadblock at Kanyina Sheema near Itendero trading centre.

“They had set up a roadblock and were robbing people. I drove through the roadblock and I alerted the Police,” he said yesterday.

“I was alert because towards Christmas, robbers tend to stage such roadblocks but the Police responded very fast,” he added.

The acting district Police commander, George Komurubuga, said the thugs had laid four electric poles across the road.
“Two tyres got punctures as he tried to drive away from the thugs.”
He added that Basajjabalaba abandoned the vehicle near Kashaka trading centre and went to the Police post.

Komurubuga said before Basajjabalaba was attacked, the thugs had robbed matooke traders aboard two vehicles. They were heading for Kampala.

The thugs, who were dressed in army uniform, exchanged fire with the Police before they took off.

A woman was among them, he added.
Komurubuga said the Police recovered military attire from Naboth Muhanguzi’s home in Itendero on Friday.

Muhanguzi claimed to be a UPDF soldier attached to the 3rd Division Garrison in Mbale.
