EDITOR—This is in response to a letter entitled “Explain mess on Mukono road” published on June 7. The Kampala-Mukono road section has deteriorated due to time and the considerable number of heavy vehicles.

The Uganda National Road Agency (UNRA) contracted Dott Services to carry out maintenance works on this road. The contractor started pothole repairs on January 29 on the Bweyogerere-Mukono section and it is still going on.

Maintenance works on this road will not only consist of pothole repairs but the entire road will be resealed with a new layer of tarmac to a width of 7.2 metres. Other works will consist of repairing shoulders and resealing with a single seal; spot rehabilitation of severely distressed areas; cleaning and replacement of culverts; and installation of new road signs and kilometre markers.

The stretch between Kazinga and Namanve is one of the severely distressed areas that may require rehabilitation instead of patching.
UNRA is not in the business of offering excuses on behalf of contractors.

The progress on this project has been slow and UNRA is working with the contractor to put in more effort to complete the project on time. UNRA is studying the contractor’s revised work programme to expedite the works and minimise traffic delays. The road is supposed to be completed by the end of January 2010.
