SIX firms have started a community effort to keep the drainage systems from Kitintale Market to Port Bell in Kampala clean.

The firms last week unblocked the drainage systems in the two city suburbs and sensitised residents on how to keep their places clean.

Plasto-foam Industries, Pipeline Designs and Foam Industries, Riham Biscuits and Water, Medipoint Industries and Afroplast Enterprises provided manpower and tools for the week-long exercise, which started last Thursday.

They also provided six bins at Kampala City Council (KCC) dumping spots for sorting refuse.
Ronnie Mayambala from Plasto-foam said there was ready market for used plastic bags.

“We pay sh500 to sh900 for clean plastic bags, which we re-cycle to make items like electric cable insulators,” he said.

Such community efforts to clean the environment follow the inability of the local authorities to collecting rubbish or remove from drainage systems, which has led to flooding in several city suburbs.

A city official admitted that they lacked garbage bins, adding that although KCC collects garbage daily, some residents continue dumping rubbish in drainage systems.

“They do it at night. Some use mad people, who dump it anyhow.
“Whoever is got dumping garbage inappropriately will be charged,” the official said.

City authorities had set up a firm to collect garbage from homes soon after the election of mayor Nasser Ssebaggala.

The effort failed after residents complained about the firm’s fees.
