ABOUT 300 mourners on Sunday attended the funeral of Sardarni Gurmeet Marwaha at the Hindu crematorium in Naguru, a Kampala suburb.

She was the mother of the National Resistance Movement party deputy national treasurer, Parminder Singh. Gurmeet, aged 65, fell ill on Friday before a family dinner and died of respiratory complications, according to Singh popularly known as Katongole.

During the cremation, the NRM party chief whip, Daudi Migereko, said the President regretted his failure to attend the funeral, saying he had a tight schedule.

Migereko also delivered a message from the Vice-President, Gilbert Bukenya. The mourners included national guidance minister Kabakumba Matsiko and other senior government and NRM officials.

Representatives from the Buganda kingdom also attended. Gurmeet is survived by her husband, Avtar Singh Marwaha, two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren.
