Merely changing names won’t help

EDITOR—I wish to comment on Evelyn Schiller’s article published on June 17.
Addressing a press conference at Fairway hotel she argued that bride price should be changed to bridal gifts. I would like to remind her that mere changing of the name does not help in anyway reversing its dangers. Schiller elaborated the negative effects of bride price like forced marriages, dropping out of school, failure to pay the price and several others.
However, she did not give a solution. I would have loved to hear from her proposing the abolition of bride price since it is seen as a money-making venture. Merely changing the name to ‘bridal gifts’ will not help.
