THE Church of Uganda House of Bishops on Monday elected George Erwau as the new bishop of Soroti Diocese.

Erwau becomes the fifth bishop of the 48 year-old diocese, replacing the retired bishop Bernard Obaikol.

Until his appointment, Erwau was the diocesan secretary.

He has also held positions of curate and vicar of St. Peters’ Cathedral, Soroti as well as mission coordinator and the archdeacon of Ngora in Kumi district.

The bishop-elect is currently pursuing a Masters Degree of Arts in organisational leadership and management at the Uganda Christian University, Mukono.

He also holds a diploma in theology from Makerere University and a degree in theology and ministry from the University of Durham, UK.

Erwau will be consecrated and enthroned on September 6 at St. Peters’ Cathedral in Soroti, according to the Provincial Secretary, Aaron Mwesigye.

The bishops sitting at Lweza Training and Conference Centre, however, did not name the new bishop for the northern Uganda diocese to replace the retired bishop, Nelson Onweng.

The House will meet again on August 8, to elect the new bishop.

A statement signed by Mwesigye said: “The bishops have deferred the election of the bishop of northern Uganda for technical reasons.”

They are expected to choose between reverends John Olanya and John Gakumba.
