Farmers in Kasambya sub-county, Kibaale district have rejected 15 friesian cows supplied under the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) programme.

The sub-county councillor, Chrizestom Lubowa, said the farmers complained to him about the poor quality of the cattle. The farmers said the cattle were not of the type they agreed upon.

He added that some of the cows were blind, which was unacceptable. Lubowa disclosed that the supplier had been directed to take back the animals since he did not follow the stipulated procurement guidelines.

The sub-county NAADS coordinator, Amiru Kyomuhendo, said each of the heifers was valued at sh1.2m. Kyomuhendo said they could not give such poor quality cattle to the farmers because the goal of the Government’s Prosperity-for-All programme would not be achieved.

The district NAADS coordinator, Dr. Moses Amanya, said he directed the supplier to withdraw the animals from the farmers. This is the second scandal under the NAADS programme following the rejection of cocks and broiler chicks by farmers in Kagadi sub-county last month. The farmers said the birds were of poor quality.

Kibaale district chairman George Namyaka has warned civil servants against frustrating the NAADS programme. Namyaka said many civil servants had turned into procurement officers and supplied sub-standard goods.
