Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi has dismissed reports that he was the target of unknown persons who poisoned a commissioner in his office.

Elizabeth Alimadi Ociti, who is attached to the Peace Recovery and Development Plan, was last Thursday served with groundnuts that contained Demozepam.

The substance, said to be a tranquiliser, made her feel dizzy and her tongue “heavy”.

An office attendant, Annet Nakyanga, 34, and a secretary, Sarah Adungo, 26, are in Police custody over the poisoning.

It was reported that Ociti was served the snack and tea by Nakyanga.

A local tabloid yesterday reported that Nsibambi was the intended target.

Appearing before the presidential affairs committee yesterday, the premier dismissed the report that he was the target as ‘rubbish’.

“That is absolute nonsense,” an evidently angry Nsibambi said.

He was appearing before the committee chaired by Gerald Simon Menhya to discuss his ministry’s policy statement.

In response to concerns by the committee members over the matter, the premier said he had received calls from many people, including MPs, commiserating with him after the story was published.

“I cannot be poisoned. I am very popular. These reports should be dismissed with costs,” Nsibambi stated.

Ociti was yesterday examined by a Police surgeon. The findings will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution.

The two women were late yesterday afternoon scheduled to record another statement at the Criminal Investigation Directorate head office in Kibuli, a Kampala suburb.

The Police detectives led by Wejuli Baraza searched the suspects’ homes, hoping to get exhibits of Demozepam, with no luck.

Ociti is a daughter of the late Otema Alimaddi, a Prime Minister in the Milton Obote II Government.

The Permanent Secretary in the premier’s office, Pius Bigirimana, refused to comment on the incident, saying investigations had to be completed first.
