WORLD 5000m bronze medallist Moses Kipsiro will spice up the national athletics championships by taking part in Friday’s 1500m competition before flying out for the Monaco Grand Prix the next day.

The MTN sponsored championships, due at Namboole tomorrow and Saturday, climaxes the national track and field calendar.

Kipsiro, who has never missed any national event when he is in the country, has decided to forfeit his favourite 5000m (which will be organised on Saturday), and run the 1500m to be in time for Tuesday’s Monaco world athletics governing body IAAF Permit event.

“Kipsiro said he wanted to encourage other runners,” said his country manager Godfrey Nuwagaba.

But the manager was not yet sure whether Benjamin Kiplagat, Abraham Chepkirwok, Boniface Kiprop and Simon Ayeko will also compete at Namboole.

However Stephen Kiprotich and Martin Toroitich are expected to take part in their continued attempt to hit the qualifying mark for the world championships in Berlin, Germany, August 15-23.

National athletics federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru said they expect most athletes to compete in the national championships as they strive to qualify for the world championships.

The event will be the final chance for athletes who do not require electronic timers, a facility lacking at Namboole, to prove their worth.

For the first time, the federation will include the pole vault and hammer throw on the programme, if they attract enough competitors. The technical team met yesterday to finalise the programme and vet qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Global Sports, managers of international stars like Kenenisa Bekele and Haile Gerbrselassie, have sent their manager Jurrie Van Der Velden to the championships to identify promising talent. He will particularly target the women participants.

The company already handles national athletes Kiplagat, Moses Kibet and Stephen Kiprotich among others.
