THE Police arrested two Jie warriors suspected to have illegally possessed two guns that were recovered in Kotido district after a tip-off by a resident.

Thomson Ogole, the regional Police chief, identified the suspects as Moses Lokuda Kaperul of Nakaliri village in Panyangara sub-county and Teko Lokwang Apal of Riam Riam village.

“We recovered one gun and nine bullets hidden in Kapreul’s hut,” Ogole said. “At the time of Apal’s arrest, his gun had 15 bullets.”

Ogole said the suspects would help the Police to recover more guns, adding that they would be charged with unlawful possession of guns. “We want to ensure that the communities in the region understand that without a gun, one can be protected and live a sustainable life,” he said.

Ogole commended the residents for responding to the call by the security agents to report crime in their villages.

The Government started the disarmament programme in Karamoja in 2001 in response to an upsurge in livestock raids.

About 27,000 guns have so far been recovered.
