The Uganda Human Rights Commission tribunal has commenced hearings after seven months of recess.

The commission last had its hearings in November last year before the term of office for the former commissioners, led by Margaret Sekaggya, expired.

New commissioners were appointed by President Yoweri Museveni and were sworn in May after being vetted by Parliament. The commissioners include Medi Kaggwa (chairperson), Agaba Maguru, Constantine Karusoke, Joseph Etima, Mariam Wangadya and Dr. Katebalirwe Amooti.

According to the officials, the commission has registered over 500 cases countrywide since January, while others were carried forward from the previous years. The commission plans to hear 191 cases this month.
