THE Police have detained Phiona Mutamba, the woman whose boyfriend allegedly committed suicide on Monday at Workers House after stabbing her, report Charles Ariko and Eddie Sejjoba.

Sources yesterday said the Police were investigating Mutamba in relation to Simon Baker Kirenzi’s death.

“She is here (Central Police Station) with us for her safety as well,” the source said.

Another source said they suspected Mutamba could have stabbed Kirenzi in self-defence during a brawl.

Mutamba was on Tuesday allowed to meet her mother and other relatives at the homicide office where she recorded a statement.

The Police retained her handbag which contained several items including her photos with Kirenzi, a cellphone and other items as exhibits.

Detectives later took the items, including a knife that was recovered from the scene, to the Government Analytical Laboratory at Wandegeya. Her fingerprints were also taken.

“The Police will revisit the scene for further investigations,” the Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, explained.

Another source said a video footage obtained from Workers House indicated that Kirenzi did not stab himself to death as stated by Mutumba.

Meanwhile, FIDA, a women lawyers’ federation, has offered free legal services to Mutamba if is charged.
