PARLIAMENT has asked the Auditor General to institute a special probe into the Great Lakes project.

“The project has been under the sole management of Sarah Bireete, with minimum supervision from the foreign affairs ministry. The laxity in the supervision led to its gross mismanagement,” Lule Mawiya (NRM), the foreign affairs committee chairperson, said.

Bireete, the project coordinator in Uganda, was in June charged with embezzling $11,160 (about sh250m) from the ministry between February and May.

The project is aimed at promoting peace, stability and development in its member states.

Mawiya noted that the ministry had not included the project in its policy statement despite a recommendation by MPs last year.

The committee also advised that the treaty establishing the East African Community be reviewed, saying the pact does not address the relationship between the regional and national parliaments.
