ICE cream plants that were stopped from production have been cleared by the Dairy Development Authority and the standards agency. “A team of our inspectors visited the plants and tested their products.
The results have indicated that the ice cream is safe for human consumption,†Dr. Nathan Twinamasiko, the executive director, said.
He said the agency would ensure that the dairy products in the country were safe for human consumption. “Our main job is safety of consumers,†Twinamasiko said.
According to the latest report from the agency, Simka, Kooksy, Fidodido, Quest, and Frenzy ice creams all passed the required standards.
Twinamaskio said all milk processors and ice cream makers were given had to comply with set standards.
“Those who fail to meet the set standards will have problems with us. We issue the licences and can revoke them when these standards are not met,†he said.
Agnes Baguma the DDA Quality and Regulatory services manager said they had also checked and inspected the processing lines and verified that they met quality and safety.
The new move follows a probe instituted by the standards agency, Uganda National Bureau of Standards that had queries regarding the quality of the ice cream.
Baguma said UNBS checks for quality standards while DDA implements the standards. “We check for pathogens that can cause sickness to persons who consume ice cream of milk products.
Once these are detected, we declare such products unsafe for human consumption,†she said.
“I can’t put my profession to line. Once we find deficiencies, we shall close them down. We don’t only close them, but also tell them to recall all the products in the market,†she explained.
“All the samples got from the above ice cream plants have met the microbiological requirements as per the diary and ices and ice creams,†she said.
