HUNDREDS of families in Kitanda sub-county, Masaka district, lost houses and plantations following a heavy down pour which lasted 45 minutes on Sunday, reports Ali Mambule.

Kato Matovu, the LC1 vice-chairman for Lwemiti village said over 600 households were directly affected by the hailstorm. He added that Lukaawa, Mizindaalo, Lwemitiiti, Kyankoko, Kabagengereza and Misenyi villages were most affected.

Molly Nakyanzi, a resident said she lost cassava, sweet potato and banana plantations. “We prayed for the rain but it has turned out disastrous. The crops have perished and we have no seeds to replant,” Nakyanzi told The New Vision.

She added that she did not have any shelter for her four children since their house was destroyed. Bukomansimbi MP Hajji Iddi Lubyayi visited the affected areas to console the people.

He re-assured them that the Government would help them. “The Government, through the disaster and prepared- ness ministry will supply relief items and food,” Lubyayi said.

He promised to hire people to repair the damaged houses.
