THE German ambassador to Uganda has advised that democratic principles and the rule of law should be upheld ahead of the 2011 elections.

Germany has in the past supported Uganda during the resettlement process in Acholi and Lango regions and in the restoration of peace in the Great Lakes region.

“In view of the forthcoming elections, democratic principles and rule of law should be strengthened and not weakened. This is particularly important regarding the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” Reinhard Buchholz, the German ambassador to Uganda, advised.

He was recently addressing guests at the reception hosted by the Germany embassy in Uganda to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the unification of Germany at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala.

The ambassador was criticised for taking sides in the dispute between Mengo and the central government
“This was a misunderstanding; I support democracy, good governance, the rule of law and fully respect the sovereign right of all people to choose their way to achieve democracy,” he said.

The ambassador stunned guests when he read his full speech in Luganda, a move he said was a tribute and expression of his respect to Ugandan culture and civilization.

The government Chief Whip and guest of honour, Daudi Migereko, disclosed that a business delegation from Germany will later this month visit Uganda to strengthen economic and political ties between the two countries.

Over the years, Uganda has benefited from infrastructure, energy, education, water and sanitation development programmes supported by the Germany Technical Cooperation.

Migereko attributed the positive cooperation between the two countries to the ambassador’s good working relations with the Government.

He commended the Germany government for the political and economic assistance offered to Uganda mainly during the resettlement process in Acholi and Lango regions.
