SINCE the rains are back, it is necessary to carry warm clothing. Some people are embarrassed to carry sweaters when it is not raining. Well, there is the option of the sleeveless sweater, which can be worn on a chilly or hot day.

According to a local designer, Shafiq Kimuli, the sweaters are actually made to generate less warmth than the full sweater. The sleeveless sweaters are made of lighter material.

Kimuli says the sleeveless sweater is fashionable and makes a statement. The sweater is international singer Justin Timberlake’s trademark.

It can be worn at a casual or formal setting. For the formal wearer, the sweater can be worn over a long-sleeve shirt, with or without a tie inside.

Kimuli says it is better to wear it over a body-hugging shirt. In casual settings the sweater can be worn with almost anything, though it makes a bolder statement coming atop any long-sleeve casual shirt or T-shirt, with tight jeans or pants.

Sleeveless sweaters come in many designs, including square neckline, turtle neck-line and V-neck. Some come with exceptional features, say pockets on the side or at the breast, varying designs — from plain, striped to checkered.

Wool is the prescribed material because it looks cool and is easy to wash. Some of the sweaters are cotton.

The sweaters can be bought from clothing dealers in town, especially boutiques, from sh15,000 upwards.
