THE National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), has embarked on an operation to close bars in Kampala over noise pollution. The operation being jointly carried out by Kampala City Council (KCC) and the Police kicked off over the weekend. Five bar managers have since been arrested
Naboth Kusiima, the environment crime Police chief, identified the suspects as Robert Lwanga of Robert’s Bar in Mutungo and Robert Alideki and Atanansi Lutuga, both working at DV-8 on the Kitintale-Luzira road.
Others were George Tiger of After Six Bar and Emmanuel Balya Yiga of Mutungo. The Police also confiscated music equipment such as speakers.
Kusiima explained that the operation followed complaints from the public over noise from the bars. He said the suspects would be charged with causing noise pollution, disturbing peace and operating illegal bars.
“We are going to move to all divisions of Kampala,†Kusiima said. KCC also plans to scrutinise the operation guidelines of bars and has warned owners that they risk having their licences revoked if found operating illegal night clubs.
