FORMER national boxers Tyson Sekabira (heavyweight) and Atanus Mugerwa (bantam) were made to sweat as rising stars showed a lot of potential in the national trials on Sunday.

Unlike the pair, former light heavyweight Charles ‘Jogoo’ Komakech was forced to retire in round two after coming under a flurry of punches from Swaibu Matovu.

Mugerwa, who marched to the final through a string of knockouts, could not believe himself when he was declared 2-1 winner over Joseph Kalema.

Kalema gave the former champion a bloody nose including one knockdown.
Mugerwa, who also survived a count, shed tears of joy when referee Moses Kintu declared him champion at Centenary Park. On his part, Sekabira had to dig into experience to overcome Solomon Geko.

The event, sponsored by Pinnacle Security, was meant to select a national team for the President's Cup in Taipei, China due December 4-13.
The squad will be named later, according to UABF vice president technical Patrick Lihanda.
