The district has one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in Uganda, the district health officer, Dr. Rogers Masaba, said on Tuesday. He disclosed that while the eastern region HIV/AIDS prevalence of 5.3% was one of the lowest, Kapchorwa had a rate of 7%. “We have to revise our efforts to ensure that whatever we do goes towards curbbing the current trend. This trend means that we have problems related to care, treatment and psycho-social support to orphans, the vulnerable and families,” he added.

Over 500 people on Tuesday received free HIV testing and counselling services during the World AIDS Day celebrations. The programme, which was conducted at Kijangi Primary School, was sponsored by Tullow Oil and Buliisa district local government. Other organisations that sponsored the function were USAID, HIPS, DED and Toyota Uganda. Under the programme, which started last year in Buliisa and Hoima districts, health experts have trained 350 peer educators to sensitise the communities about HIV/AIDS, family planning, sanitation and Malaria. The peer educators also distribute condoms, moon-beads and mosquito nets to the communities. Impressed by the high turn-up of the local residents for the HIV testing exercise, Brian Glover, the managing director of Tullow Oil Uganda, pledged to increase funding for the activities.
