THE national women’s cricket team will use the ICC East Africa tournament to help groom fresh talent, who are the majority of the side that travelled to Kenya yesterday.

Ten of the 13-player squad who open against Rwanda tomorrow were in the U-19 team that won an ICC tournament in Tanzania last month.

The senior players in the Ugandan side, coached by Davis Turinawe, are Franklin Najjumba, Barbra Mukankusii and Stella Atim.

“We will mainly be looking to groom the young players,” said team manager Diana Musiime.

“We are taking a new (and young) side but they are good enough to win,” she added.

The Uganda team have not lost a tournament since the loss to Zimbabwe in the 2006 World Cup Qualifiers so we are confident.

Uganda’s young side will need to do much more to maintain the winning record created by their seniors, who have been ruled out of the trip because of work and academic commitments.
