INSPIRED by the finishing prowess of Francis Jjemba, Express SC augmented their status as table leaders with a 2-1 win over Nalubaale at Nakivubo yesterday.

The fleet football forward earned the Red Eagles an early lead after heading at the far post a perfectly weighted corner taken by Phillip Obwiny.

After a beautiful one-two with Daniel Sserunkuuma outside the box, Jjemba blew the wind out of a vibrant Nalubaale side with a second goal that helped Express push their tally to 30 points from 12 games.

Bunamwaya are second at 24 from 10 games with Police and Masaka in third and fourth at 21 each (11 games each).

Express’ victory also turned out to be a relief for Sserukuuma, who could have virtually ended the match in the first half had he made the most of three clear chances including one in front of an empty goal, that came his way. Patrick Edema scored Nalubaale’s consolation.

At the same time, Arua Central became the first team to skip a match this season when they failed show up against champions URA.

The West Nile team official Mike Leti explained yesterday that they failed to raise enough money for the trip.
Meanwhile, KCC’s bank balance will certainly grow with the sale of Moses Oloya, Caesar Sapeo and Moses Musoke.

But without the three players’ imposing style of play, questions were being asked as to whether the former champions will show enough spark to contest for the title.

With four games played since the trio’s departure for intended moves to Vietnam and Italy (Oloya), the answer already seems to be a big no.

KCC have not only struggled in their three previous games (0-0 against Maji, 1-1 against Boroboro, 1-1 against Kinyara), they have looked ordinary and the signs are that they could have another disappointing campaign.

Coach Sam Ssimbwa must fast stabilise his ship and a win against Firemasters will not only instil hope among the dispirited club faithful but will help keep table leaders Express within touching distance.

At Namboole, SC Villa will place Bunamwaya’s title-winning mentality under severe scrutiny.
