Just what will Uganda be like in 2008? A great place to live in, according to a group of experts and critics who annually get together to look forward and project what we should expect our country to be like this New Year as presented in the magazine Uganda in 2008.

In the words of our predictions expert, David Mukholi, it will be “a place to put one’s money and live happily.”

The 52-page magazine will be inserted in the New Vision tomorrow. Buy a copy of the paper and get a free the magazine.

Most of the writers in the magazine agree that after the hectic last two years (elections in 2006, and CHOGM in 2007), 2008 will be the year when everybody tries to enjoy the fruits we have reaped. The writers agree that, yes, it will be a wonderful year.

Unfortunately, none of them foresaw the chaos that neighbouring Kenya has become. “Nobody in their wildest dreams could have imagined that Kenya would break down the way it has, nobody,” said Kalungi Kabuye, editor of Uganda in 2008. “So while reading the articles, one has to factor that fact in, but having done so, the magazine is till very relevant.”

The writers see a period of unprecedented economic growth, with Savings and Credit Cooperatives spreading the availability of financial resources. They see a lot of investment coming into the country, with the entry of more foreign bankst, raising competition and possibly bringing down interest rates.

Almost all the writers see Joseph Kony as ceasing to be a major factor in the country’s future.

Fr. Carlos Rodriguez, a Catholic missionary who has lived in the north for many years, is more worried about the post-conflict situation of the people.
