The LC3 chairpersons of the sub-counties bordering Murchison Falls National Park in Amuru district have petitioned Acholi MPs to lobby Parliament to de-gazette part of the park for human settlement and farming. Anaka chairman, Denis Okema, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, last week asked Amuru Woman MP Concy Aciro to lobby Parliament to de-gazette the eastern part of the park bordering Anaka, Koch-Goma and Purongo sub-counties for the increasingly growing population.

Tortured boy to get sh28m
The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) tribunal has awarded sh28m to a 14-year old pupil of Koch-Goma Primary School. Charles Omony was arrested in Gulu district, tortured and detained for 27 days by UPDF soldiers on allegation of being in possession of a stolen gun. "The soldiers tied me on a tree and beat me as they ordered me to produce the said gun. They also dropped melted plastic pieces on my legs. I was also made to lie on a swam of ants which bit me," Omony said. The Tribunal, that was chaired by Bernard Turyashemererwa, sat in Gulu on Monday.

Sh500m for Moyo road
The ministry of works has earmarked sh500m for the rehabilitation of Moyo-Obongi road. The district engineer, Louis Drichi Ibiya, said the ministry had so far sent sh100m for the first phase of the work.

32 hospital staff sacked
Gulu Independent Hospital has sacked 32 employees, mostly nurses and the support staff. A January 9 letter from the managing director, David Oola, said they could not sustain a large labour force.But some of those sacked said they were not given three months notice a required by law.
