OVER 70 people in Kayunga district were on Sunday left homeless after a hailstorm destroyed their houses and gardens.

Kayunga sub-county chairperson, Lugard Ssalabwa, said cassava, maize, vanilla, potato and banana plantations were destroyed. The most affected villages were Kaazi, Kisaaba and Bubajwe.

Ssalabwa said six head of cattle, 13 goats and several chickens were also killed by the storm, which also de-roofed over 22 houses in Ndeeba, Namagabi and Bukolooto villages in Kayunga township.

The Woman MP, Florence Nayiga Ssekabira, asked the disaster preparedness ministry to help the affected people.

“Residents need urgent assistance because most of them have nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat.”

One of the victims, Ester Mugweri, 48, a resident of Kaazi, said her two acres of cassava, potato, beans, maize, vanilla and banana plantations were razed by the storm.

“I’m a widow with a family of 13. I don’t know where I will get food to feed the children,” Mugweri said in tears.

The acting district chairman, Boniface Bandikubi, attributed the storm to deforestation, saying most of the trees were cut down by residents to burn charcoal.

Bandikubi urged the residents to plant trees around their homes and gardens.
