The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has accused President Yoweri Museveni of diverting the debate on the Land Bill.

The UPC secretary general, Peter Walubiri, was responding to Museveni’s remarks that Buganda kings are Luo.

“Instead of debating the major issues, Museveni has resorted to diversionary tales like the origin of Buganda kings, how the Kabaka wanted to join the Luweero war and many others.”

Walubiri said the debate was not about the origin of kings but the substance of the Bill.

“Delving into such non-issues indicates that they have lost focus. A student, who will fail, writes hydrogen instead of oxygen.”

Walubiri asked the Government to facilitate free debate and nationwide consultations on land issues.

UPC also wants Museveni to clarify his position on the Libyan leader Muammar Gadaffi’s advice that he should not retire from the presidency.

Party president Miria Obote said: “We want Museveni to tell Ugandans whether he is a life president or not.”
