A German high level athletics coach, Gunter Lange arrived over the weekend to help revive athletics coaching among games teachers.

His coming follows the revival of the Germany-Uganda development co-operation that stalled in 1984.

Lange (right) will be in the country for a month to train games teachers modern athletics trends so that they impart it to youths in schools.

Lange, with a long experience working with African countries, is seconded by the Cologne-based German Athletics Federation (DVL).

The second phase of his programme will cover Gulu April 11-22 targeting northern Uganda schools.

The trainer will select outstanding performers from both regional courses to participate in the last course in Kampala April 23-28.

“DVL and the German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) jointly worked with the Uganda Olympic Committee to effect this training funded by the Germany foreign office,”, Gunter told the press at Kyambogo yesterday.

The first course kicks off tomorrow at Kyambogo grounds with teachers from 28 selected schools in the central, western and eastern regions to last 10 days.

“Afterwards I shall recommend some teachers for advanced training in Germany. Our target is sustainability where teachers can handle as many young athletes”, Gunter clarified.

He said athletes trained from 12 years would be able to represent their countries at least in three Olympic meets.

Kyambogo University sports tutor Byaruhanga Kadodoba said the Germany - Uganda Co-operation in athletics started around 1968. It had the late John Akii Bua train in Germany before winning a gold in the 1972 Munich Olympics.

The last German coach to visit Uganda was Ingo Ruper in 1984.
