THE Uganda Red Cross Society has launched a four-year water project worth sh7.5b to cover five districts in the Albertine region in western Uganda.

The project will be implemented in 14 sub-counties in Kabarole, Kasese, Bundibugyo, Hoima and Buliisa districts.

Supported by the European Union (EU) and the Danish Red Cross, the project aims at ensuring adequate provision of safe and clean water.

Launching the project last Thursday at Boma Grounds in Fort Portal, the water state minister, Jennifer Namuyangu, said the initiative would reduce water-related diseases like cholera and typhoid.

She also said the project would address the problem of low water coverage.

“The project has come at the right time when many people in rural areas do not have clean and safe water,” she said.

Namuyangu asked local leaders to sensitise the population to support the project.

The head of the EU delegation, Vincent de Visscher, urged the district authorities to ensure that the project benefits the rural communities.

He called for proper transparency and accountability of the funds under the project.

Vischer later handed over three Land Cruiser vehicles and three motorcycles to the Red Cross, which will be used in the implementation of the project.
