THERE is a decline in the production of food globally, according to the chairman of the parliamentary agriculture committee.

Deus Bikwasizehi warned that there would be famine some years to come if farmers do not grow more food crops.

Bikwasizehi, who is also the Buhweju county MP, said farmers had abandoned food production to concentrate on growing cereals to produce bio-diesel.

Addressing the Bushenyi residents on Friday during the World Food Day celebrations, he added: “We might experience shortages of food because the rate at which people are abandoning the food production sector is worrying.”

Bikwasizehi appealed to people to engage in income-generating projects, especially farming.

The district chief administrative officer, Charles Kiberu, said the National Agricultural Advisory Services programme had changed the farmers’ perception towards agriculture.

The best performing farmers were rewarded with wheelbarrows, barbed wire and pangas.
